KOLAR, AUG. 15. K.H. Muniyappa, Union Minister of State for Road Transport, said today that the Centre was committed for the welfare of the poor.
Speaking after unfurling the tricolour at the Bharat Earth Movers Ltd. (BEML) Complex in Kolar Gold Fields near here, he said the Centre had taken steps to revive sick public sector undertakings. Stating that the Centre had agreed to offer a new package for the implementation of the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) in Bharat Gold Mines Ltd. (BGML), which had been closed, the Minister said that the Union Minister for Mines would shortly visit KGF to make a formal announcement in this regard. Mr. Muniyappa said once the process of VRS implementation was over steps would be taken to revive the BGML. Many foreign companies had evinced interest in mining in KGF, he added. S. Rajendran, MLA, urged the Minister to take steps to set up small-scale industries at KGF to help the jobless miners. KGF should be accorded a special status to set up industries, he added. V.R.S.
